One of my goals for my 40x40 list (more on that later) is to go one month without spending anything money on any
want (ie. trinket, junk, sh*t, crap, clothing, shoes, purses, accessories, you know!) To set the stage, I decided that in this spending freeze I would not include food/drink entertainment for the simple reason that I live by myself and my happy hour, dinner dates with friends are just that, social outings and it's important for my mental health that I still have access to those within reason. Therefore, January 2017 sounded like a great month to reign in the spending.
What a challenge! For starters, I LOVE after Christmas sales of Christmas decor. In fact nearly every piece of my Christmas decor has come from a sale after Christmas. There was NONE of that this year.
Every morning I would open my email and there was a deeal or a coupon or a want speaking to me! Let me show you.
I actually do need a new hand mixer but no reason to purchase now when I have a counter top Kitchen Aid mixer!
And these, just calling my name. Not to mention Groupon also had a 20% off code this week.
These just about killed me. I saw these on Instagram and here it is the dead of winter and they'd be so cute!
I've thrown out about 5 pairs of Yoga pants in the last month. Probably because they've been getting worn so much in my current health situation.
Each pair had a hole. So when Old Navy sent me an email that said athletic wear was 50% off I started filling up a cart online of new Yoga pants. I mean not like I don't have 5 more pairs in the drawer. I, however, closed my computer and walked away.
But then this happened a few days later. Literally the crouch ripped out of one of my favorite pairs. Was it a sign? Should have bought them!
I learned a lot. For instance I love a variety of products in the shower and during the first week I realized I was out of nearly all of my body wash bottles. Being that I am a coupon lover I could not believe that I was going to be down to 1 bottle of body wash in the shower as I usually buy several bottles to have on hand in the cabinet. I questioned, what was I gonna for the rest of the month with no variety! Then it occurred to me to search through travel drawer and see if I had any travel sized body wash I could use. Sure enough, I did!

In the middle of the month we experienced the Ice Storm that never was. I decided one of my projects that weekend would be to rearrange furniture in my living room. In doing so I moved decor and traded out items. Several times I kept thinking how I needed to go thrift to find a new gold frame or artificial flowers to add height or run to IKEA to grab storage containers and then realized there will be none of that this month. I made a list of potential purchases at IKEA and stuffed it in a drawer. Looking back I actually think attempting to participate in this challenge that particular weekend was a good thing because I think we are managing just fine with how the decor looks now and I probably would have bought a ton of junk I didn't need to enhance my decor!
While I tried #nospendjanuary and gave it a good effort I am sad to report that I will be having to TRY it once again. Not sure which month I will attempt this but I have approximately 30 months to get it right. The breaking point. A $1 heart from the Dollar Tree that I bought on impulse while completely forgetting my challenge! I got home and literally it broke my heart when I realized I had just bought JUNK that I didn't need. Although it does look cute hanging on my front door of my front door. Not sure it was worth busting the challenge for!
And then this adorable ISU dress shirt popped up on my Amazon feed. The size medium was $5. Yes, $5. I couldn't hit purchase quick enough. I'm sorry to report when I went to take a screen shot of the shirt today for the purpose of this blog it was back to full price, $37.99.
Anybody else out there tried #nospendjanuary #31daynospending? I have read a few other blogs on people's experiences with this. It's very eye opening and enlightening. But what's that they say, "good habits never come easy....."
