I just returned from a week in Texas. What a great week! Great friends, great food, great wine, great shopping! It was a much needed vacation and I even enjoyed some warmer weather. I decided I need to take a road trip at least once a year to enjoy as it seems to be a great way to "un-wind."
The drive was also a great time of much needed reflection for me and where I am in my life. I think it is important to have time to reflect on where you are at several times a year. I seem to be best at it when I am alone in the car. I thought a lot about my life in Kansas City and if it is all it is cracked up to be. While I love everything in Kansas City, I feel like I am missing something and we can all agree life is short. The majority of my friends here are married or married with children. I'm not at that point in my life and I often feel like I no longer fit in. It's a little lonely being the odd man out all the time and Kansas City is not exactly known as a place to meet people. It was the duration of my thoughts as I drove to last week. Where is there more in life? Where could I get good medical care? Where does one go? The beach? It's a nice thought that is for sure.
I also couldn't help but think what if I would have stayed in Texas nearly 8 years ago. Where would I be in life? Would I be married to a cowboy? Lord help me! :) Would I own a house? Would Jill and I have both stayed here? A lot of "what ifs" that we'll never know the answer to. I drove by my old apartment and couldn't help but think of all the memories; starting a near fire learning how to melt chocolate to make chocolate strawberries, scraping "ice" off my windshield with my kitchen utensils, having both sets of Grandparents visit my Dallas apartment (they never got to see my Kansas City home), getting my first grill and trying to learn how to light it (second near fire!), the Jamaican lady that lived downstairs and her grocery cart, buying my first car and then having it heavily damaged in a hail storm, the list goes on. It all seems like YEARS ago yet not really.

Top 10 things I miss about Texas
10. No state income taxes and cheap gas.
9. My Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae Book club- loved those girls!
8. Norstrom Rack and Ross- God, I live in those stores.
7. A decent airport- fly into MCI and you'll agree- hello who puts 3 terminals in an airport and doesn't connect them? Missouri folk- that's who.
6. Snuffer's- I can smell the cheese fries now.
5. My clients- the clients I first worked for in Dallas changed my life. I will never forget them
4. Mexican Food- enough said- nothing compares in Kansas City.
3. Mild weather- ok with the exception of last week- flip flops nearly 9 months of the year.
2. Special friends, like Andrea and Beth. While we've all gone separate ways since those many years ago I will always cherish their friendship, support, love and insight they gave me on life.
1. My youth and innocence- I was so young back then, couldn't even cook myself a decent meal and had no concept yet on the impact world ahead of me. Ah, to be 22 again.
Top 10 Reasons Why I Don't Miss Texas
10. Toll Roads
9. Big hair, big boobs and red lipstick- everything is bigger in Texas- I didn't ever really have the "look" and Texas girls take FOREVER to get ready.
8. The 4 seasons- ok 3 seasons, Spring, Summer Fall- in Dallas you blink and you could miss the leaves changing color.
7. Kansas City BBQ
6. My job
5. Boomer Sooners- equally as obnoxious as the Kansas Jayhawks. The people who actually went to OU and KU are
not the obnoxious part. The obnoxious part is the 95% of their fan base who went to JOCO and think their team is the only team in existence!
4. My house
3. Iowa State season football tickets
2. Special friends in Kansas City- they know who they are and they too have changed my life.
1. Ma & Pa = 4 hour trip home
Now it's back to the grind. Back to work, back to working on the Greater Kansas City Myasthenia Gravis Walk, Run & Roll, back to doing laundry and watching the snow melt! More pictures of the trip to come.
